What is a flamingo thinking?
Pink entirely because of what it eats. Would be plain white on any other diet.
The pink comes from carotenoids in the algae and brine shrimp it eats, broken down in the liver and deposited in the feathers. A flamingo on a different diet fades to white, which is why zoos supplement the food.
They also feed upside down. The bill is held inverted in the water and works as a filter, with the top jaw doing the moving rather than the bottom one.
