The calm is functional. Capybaras are prey animals that live in large groups beside water, and their answer to danger is to walk into it - they can stay submerged for several minutes with only their nostrils showing.
Other animals settle on them because they are allowed to. Birds, monkeys and turtles have all been photographed riding capybaras, and the tolerance appears to cost them nothing at all.
