What is a giant anteater thinking?
Thirty-five thousand ants in a day, by tongue alone. Owns no teeth whatsoever.
The tongue is 60 cm long, anchored to the breastbone, and flicks up to 150 times a minute coated in sticky saliva. Around 35,000 ants and termites a day go in without a single tooth involved.
It also raids rather than destroys. An anteater spends only a minute or two at each nest before moving on, which leaves the colony alive to be visited again - by an animal that eats nothing else.
