What is a donkey thinking?
Not stubborn, thinking. There is a difference, and it will wait for you to see it.
A donkey that stops has usually assessed something and decided against it. Horses evolved to flee danger; donkeys evolved in rocky terrain where bolting was more dangerous than freezing, so the default response to uncertainty is to stand still and think.
That difference is why they work as guard animals. A donkey placed with sheep or goats will face a fox or a dog rather than run, which is the same instinct the "stubborn" label describes from the other side.
