What is a chicken thinking?
Has one plan: to be somewhere else, immediately.
Chickens run a real social hierarchy - the original pecking order, named from studying them - and they recognise around thirty individual flock members by face.
The bolting is prey behaviour with no middle setting. A chicken's eyes sit on the sides of its head for a field of view close to 360 degrees, so it has usually seen the thing and left before you know what prompted it.
