What is a cow thinking?

A cow spends around eight hours a day chewing cud, bringing food back up and reworking it so the microbes in the first of its four stomach compartments can break down grass no mammal can digest alone.

There is more going on than the pace suggests. Cows form close friendships with particular individuals, and their heart rate and stress hormones rise measurably when separated from a preferred companion.
