Spitting is mostly llama-to-llama. It settles disputes over food and rank within the herd, and a llama that spits at a person is usually one that was handled too much as a cria and now treats people as herd members to be argued with.
They are used as guard animals for the same temperament. A llama placed with sheep will put itself between the flock and a fox or dog rather than run.
