They remember more than the reputation allows. Grey squirrels recover caches using spatial memory rather than smell, and recover a large share of them - the forgotten nuts are the minority, not the rule.
They also fake it. A squirrel that believes it is being watched will perform a full burial with nothing in its paws, then hide the real nut somewhere else entirely.
