What is a sea lion thinking?

Barking at nothing anyone else can identify. Will do it again in nine seconds.

The barking is territorial. Males hold a patch of beach or pontoon through the breeding season and bark almost continuously to advertise it, which is why a marina in summer is louder than the sea ever is.

Mothers and pups use a different call entirely. Each pair learns the other's voice and can pick it out of a colony of thousands after the mother has been away at sea for days.
