What is a blue jay thinking?
Screaming. No particular reason. Just screaming.
Blue jays are mimics, and the impression they do best is a red-shouldered hawk. Nobody is certain why. The leading idea is that it clears a feeder — everything smaller leaves, and the jay has the seed to itself.
Which does not explain the rest of it. Jays keep up a running commentary all day, alarm calls with nothing to be alarmed about included, and the honest position is that a lot of it is just noise.
