The bite delivers venom. Komodos have glands producing proteins that stop blood clotting and drop blood pressure, so the animal does not need to win the fight - it needs to land one bite and wait.
They then track by smell. A forked tongue collects scent particles and delivers them to a sensory organ in the roof of the mouth, which lets a Komodo follow a trail for kilometres over the following hours.
