Matriarchs carry decades of route knowledge. During the 1993 drought in Tanzania, herds led by older females left for remembered water and survived at much higher rates than herds whose matriarchs had died - the memory was the difference.
They also recognise individual humans by voice, and can distinguish language and gender well enough to react differently to recordings of groups that had historically been a threat.
