A panda has the digestive system of a carnivore and the diet of a herbivore. It cannot break down cellulose efficiently, so it gets very little out of each mouthful and compensates by eating 12 to 38 kg of bamboo a day.
The famous thumb is not a thumb. It is an enlarged wrist bone that works as an opposable pad, evolved specifically for gripping bamboo stems.
