Crows are among the few animals that make and use tools, and a New Caledonian crow will bend a piece of wire into a hook to reach food it cannot otherwise get. A bin lid is not a serious obstacle to that.
They also work the problem socially. Crows watch each other solve things and copy what works, so once one bird in the neighbourhood has your bin figured out, it stops being one bird's discovery.
