What is a woodpecker thinking?

Started on the weatherboards at six. Considers this reasonable.

On a house it is usually drumming rather than feeding. The bird is not looking for insects in your cladding - it is picking the most resonant surface it can find to announce a territory, and timber siding is better at that than any tree.

Which is also why it starts at six and why it chose your wall specifically. A gutter or a metal flashing will do just as well, and the loudest option available is the one that gets used.
