The bin chicken did not choose this. Australian white ibis are wetland birds, and drought through the 1970s and 80s pushed them out of the inland wetlands they had always used. The cities had water and food that never ran out.
That long curved bill is built for probing mud for crustaceans, which turns out to be an excellent tool for going through a bin. Nothing about the bird changed. Only the wetland did.
