What is a pelican thinking?
Bill holds more than its stomach does. Has never once found that a problem.
The pouch holds around three times what the stomach does - roughly 13 litres in an Australian pelican. It is a net, not a lunchbox: the bird scoops water and fish together, then drains the water out before swallowing.
The bill is also the longest of any bird, at close to half a metre. It looks unwieldy and is doing exactly one job extremely well.
