Flight was given up for size and speed. An ostrich runs at around 70 km/h, covers five metres in a stride, and carries a claw on each foot capable of serious damage - a kick is a genuine defence against a lion.
The head-in-the-sand story is a misreading. Ostriches turn their eggs in a ground nest with the head down, and from a distance that looks like exactly what everyone claims it is.
