What is a hamster thinking?

Ran eleven kilometres last night. Arrived nowhere.

The distance is real. A Syrian hamster covers several kilometres a night on a wheel, and wild hamsters given a wheel outdoors use it voluntarily - so the running is something they want to do, not a symptom of the cage.

In the wild that distance is foraging range. A hamster's night is spent covering ground and filling cheek pouches; the wheel gives the same behaviour nowhere to arrive.
