The hoarding is instinct rather than mischief. Ferrets are descended from polecats, which cache surplus food in a den, and a domestic ferret runs the same routine on whatever is portable - keys, phones, socks, the TV remote.
They also sleep through most of the evidence. Ferrets sleep 14 to 18 hours a day, so the window in which your things disappear is short, concentrated and extremely productive.
