What is a zebra thinking?

The best-supported answer is flies. Experiments putting striped coats on horses found that biting flies approach normally but fail to land - the pattern disrupts their final approach, and horse flies carry disease that matters a great deal to a zebra.
The old "confuses lions" idea has held up poorly. Lions take zebra readily, and stripes are most pronounced in the regions where biting-fly pressure is highest, not where predators are.
