The behaviour is called rooting, and the damage looks far more deliberate than it is. A boar is using its snout to turn over soil for roots, tubers, fungi and grubs, and a group can strip a paddock in a night.
The tell is the pattern. Rooting leaves the turf flipped in rough sheets rather than the neat individual holes a badger or a fox digs. It is not vandalism, it is foraging, and the lawn is simply where the food was.
