What is a red squirrel thinking?
Outraged that the grey ones got the good press.
The greys did not simply outcompete them. Grey squirrels carry squirrelpox, which they survive and reds usually do not, and a population sharing woodland with infected greys declines many times faster than competition alone would explain.
Where reds do hold on, it is often conifer forest. Reds handle unripe pine cones better than greys do, which is why the strongholds are in places the greys find least worth taking.
